Stroup, Oden, Nipple shine at Roddick Invitational
SHIPPENSBURG — The 98th annual Roddick Invitational was chock-full of individual records, milestones and first-place finishes on Saturday at Shippensburg University, and several area track and field athletes from Mifflin County, Juniata, East Juniata and Mount Union each had some shining moments.
Stroup third in 3,200 to lead Juniata
Wyatt Stroup and Joey Bomberger competed in the 3,200-meter run for Juniata, with Stroup earning a medal by placing third with a time of 9:28.52. Bomberger finished 17th in 9:48.95.
Sylvia Brubaker ran in the 1,600 and wound up in 24th place in 5:26.55.
Juniata distance coach Jeff Miller said, “I thought Joey and Wyatt raced competitively today. This is their first 3,200 hard effort this season and they are both where I would like to see them at this point in the track season. This meet brings high level competition like they will see at states. Wyatt showed he’s not afraid of anyone out there by taking the lead with two laps to go in the 3,200 and hanging on to a third-place finish. Joey learned some things in his 3,200 that will help him when he’s racing his next hard 3,200 race.
Miller added, “Sylvia didn’t have the race she wanted in the 1,600, but this was her first hard 1,600 in four months, so it can take several of these high level competitive races to get back into racing at this level. She will regroup and continue to work hard. She just needs to gain confidence in her abilities.”
Wyatt Ehrenzeller participated in the javelin, finishing 16th with a personal-best distance of 155-5.
Indians throwing coach Shane Yeater said, “It was great to see Wyatt throw a PR and to gain experience by competing in a big invitational environment. This experience should give Wyatt the confidence that he will need when it comes to high pressure meets like districts.”
