Trojans battle at ICC Championship meet

WARFORDSBURG — The Inter-County Conference Cross Country Championship took place Wednesday afternoon at Southern Fulton High School in Warfordsburg.

The Mount Union boys team placed second with 59 points in the meet behind Southern Fulton scoring 36 points. The boys had 12 teams entered with four having a full roster to score. The Southern Huntingdon girls were second with 47 points and the Juniata Valley girls team was in third place with 47 points. The Rocket girls won a tiebreaker due to having the sixth runner to score. The Windber girls team placed first in the meet with 28 points. The girls had 11 teams entered with four scoring in the event.

“We are proud of how our girls competed on a tough course,” stated Hornets head coach Delores Gahagan. “Even with small numbers we were able to keep everyone healthy and strong. We are excited about Ella being ICC Champion and are looking forward to districts for all of our runners.”

Girls

Ella McCrum of Juniata Valley ran out front setting the pace and claiming the ICC girls crown turning in the fastest time of the day at 22:10.7. The Hornet girls placed third right behind the Southern Huntingdon girls team. Kara Harper of Southern Huntingdon placed tenth in the field at 26:38 followed by Rocket Lucy Wingert in 18th place with a time of 27:51.Two Hornets were right on her heels with Eve McCrum in 19th place at 28:03.4 and Lily Sunderland in 20th place at 28:03.8. Rocket Katelyn Harper placed 21st at 28:04.3. The first Trojan to cross the line was Vada Banks in the 23rd spot at 28:29 followed by Hornet Laura Kline at 28:55 in 24th place. In 26th place was Rocket Kayleigh Crouse at 29:17 and in 27th was Rocket Hanalyn Grissinger at 29:27. In 29th place was Trojan Payton Williams at 31:15 and in 35th place was Miriam Shugarts at 33:22. Also in 35th place was Rocket Isabella Whitsel at 35:00 and in 38th place was Trojan India James at 39:59. Bella Price was 41st at 47:01 for the Rockets.

“This was a tough course, and it really brought fatigue to the legs, they battled to the end,” said Rockets head coach Steve Keim. “Overall, I think the girls were disappointed with the outcome of the day, while the boys should have felt good. I think youth carried the day as it was the younger runners that had the most success. We will now focus on getting ready for the district meet. Satisfactory results for a three-year program.”

Boys

Moshannon Valley’s George Nestlerode ran out front to claim the boys championship title with a time of 19:28.8. In 17th place was Camden Lamberson of Southern Huntingdon at 21:36 followed by Matt Fracker of Forbes Road in eighth place at 21:44.7. Trojan Dorian Loner placed 12th at 21:56. In 14th was Trojan Ethan Fisher and in 15th was Hornet Max Harman at 22:12. In 19th place was Trojan Oscar James with a time of 22:38 followed by Trojan Kam Beatty at 23:05 in 21st place. In 22nd place was Hornet Caden Walters at 23:33 and in 29th was Rocket Charlie Williams at 24:21 followed by Rocket Carter Whitsel in 30th at 24:28. In 42nd place was Trojan Aydin Grove

At 27:04 with Trojan Rowan Hartman following in 43rd at 27:07. Trojan Evan Yakymac

placed 45th at 27:36 and in 46th was Jacik Hess at 27:43 for the Trojans. Trojan Landon Williams ran 53rd at 32:08.

“The course we ran today is a tough course with a number of hills,” commented Trojans head coach Bob Wydock. “The team turned in good times despite the conditions. Everyone put forth their best effort and ran hard.”

The teams will face off again at the District 6 meet held Saturday, Oct. 26 at the Indian Valley Elementary Center in Lewistown with the girls running at 1 p.m. and the boys will run at 1:30 p.m.
