REEDSVILLE — Mifflin County cross country went head-to-head with Juniata and Williamsport on Thursday afternoon. The Mifflin County boys team beat Juniata, 26-29. The Indians then defeated the Lady Huskies, 27-28.

The MC boys also beat Williamsport, 17-38. The Juniata boys defeated Williamsport, 21-34. The MC girls lost to the Millionaires, 22-35. Williamsport girls toppled Juniata, 25-35.

Carter Smith placed first in the meet for the Huskies with a time of 16:08. Wyatt Kauffman followed in fourth with a time of 16:47 and Hart Oden came in sixth at 17:27.

On Junitata’s side, Wyatt Stroup placed second with a time of 16:17, followed by Joey Bomberger at 16:33.

“It was more about getting a really solid workout in before we get to districts which is obviously what we are peaking for. Everybody looked pretty good. It’s just a matter of keeping everybody healthy for one more week but I think they got out of it what they needed. I want to send as many people to Hershey as I can. In a perfect world I send seven people, but outside of that I hope to at least get three in to extend their season by one more week,” Huskies’ boys coach Alex Monroe explained.

“Today was pretty much just a workout for me. I’m going to try to break the course record at districts and hopefully make it to states,” first-place runner Smith added.

“Today was about the team, getting some new PRs (personal records) to have a good idea of what we will look like for districts. I’m definitely taking today and feeling out that goal race pace felt really good for me,” Juniata’s Wyatt Stroup added.

Mia Coffey placed fourth for the MC girls team with a time of 21:30. Ava Wagner followed in eighth with a mark of 22:39.

Sylvia Brubaker secured first place for Juniata with a time of 18:32, followed by Carolyn Heidenrich with a 21:30.

Mifflin County girls cross country coach Neil Breneman reflected on his team’s performance. “They did great, we definitely had a bunch of season bests if not PRs. For a lot of them we saw their strongest run today so that’s what we want to see.”

Indians coach Jeff Miller added, “Some of my back runners got personal bests by over a minute. We still have a little bit more to get better at but most of the work is in. Some of the pacing and stuff we could get a little bit better for districts but we’re about where we can be.”

Next, the Huskies and Indians gear up for the District 6 Championship Meet at Indian Valley Elementary on Saturday, Oct. 26.
