CROSS COUNTRY

Huskies battle at Lehigh

BETHLEHEM — The Mifflin County girls cross country team ran in the Paul Short Invitational on Friday at Lehigh University. The Huskies competed in the high school brown race which had 40 schools and 382 total runners.

Ava Kratzer who had her second personal record in a week and broke through the 22 minute mark.

“Ava looked strong today, particularly in the third mile. She was able to pass 16 girls after the two-mile split. That takes a lot of grit and mental strength but she is determined and went for it. Taking that risk allowed her to finish at 97 for her race which is a great accomplishment in this kind of race,” Huskies coach Neil Breneman said.

“Ava Wagner also accomplished another PR (personal record) and finished second for the team. It is really exciting to see her have such a good senior year. She is also moving close to breaking 22. Although there are still several weeks left of the season, we will race less and prepare for the grand finale at districts on October 26. The team’s next race will be at Mid Penns/Tim Cook on Saturday, October 12, at Big Springs.”

(327) Maya Morgan (26:09)

Mifflin County boys cross country team also battled at the Paul Short Invite on Friday. The meet had over 7,000 runners competing over the course of the weekend.

“We knew we had to bring our absolute best and every single runner 1-12 rose to the occasion. Individually a few were disappointed, but they got the job done and I think a little perspective goes a long way if you look back at our first few races. It takes a lot of trust in the plan for them to succeed the way they are right now. Individually, I do need to highlight Carter Smith and Wyatt Kauffman,” Husky boys coach Alex Monroe noted.

“For Carter, today was his second real test at this distance/event. The results were incredible, and yet I’m not at all surprised. We agreed yesterday that a fast time would come with just competing out there. He wanted sub 15 but there’s no doubt it’s only a matter of time. His composure has been unbeatable and he intends to keep it that way. Wyatt Kauffman on the other hand has surprised me but in the best way. We started the season wanting to break 17 and he just ran 16:14. Like Carter, he has really taken to the longer distance and is just tough as nails. Watching him start to believe he belongs has been really fun.”

The Huskies are off for a week before the Mid-Penn Championships next Saturday.
