Curve close out season with win over Richmond

ALTOONA — Jase Bowen and Eli Wilson belted back-to-back home runs and four Altoona pitchers combined on a four-hitter as the Curve wrapped up the 2024 Eastern League campaign with a 5-1 victory over the Richmond Flying Squirrels at Peoples Natural Gas Field on Sunday.

The Curve finished 33-36 during the EL’s second half, which was good for third in the Southwest Division standings, and 61-76 overall.

Akron, the second-half winner, and Erie, which won the first half, will meet in the best-of-three division championship series, starting Tuesday in Akron.

Trailing 1-0 to the Flying Squirrels (30-39, 64-74) in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Curve tied the game as Endy Rodriguez walked and eventually scored on a Kervin Pichardo groundout. It was Pichardo’s 49th RBI of the season.

Altoona took the lead with a three-spot in the fifth as Bowen lead off the frame with his 10th home run of the season, a fly ball to left center field. Wilson followed with a blast of his own, his third of the year on a fly ball to left field.

Rodriguez scored the final run as he singled on a soft grounder to third and came around to score on Nick Cimillo’s triple.

Altoona made it 5-1 in the sixth as Bowen walked, stole secord for his 22nd stolen base of the season and scored on a Wilson line-drive single to left.

Blake Townsend (1-0) got the win for the Curve, pitching two innings and giving up one hit and striking out three.

For Richmond, Jack Choate (1-4) suffered the loss. He was chased after 4 1/3 innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits, striking out six and walking one.

Offensively, the Curve out-hit Richmond, 7-4. Rodriguez, Cimilli and Wilson each had two hits. Wilson drove in a pair of runs.
