Huskies and Indians provide season glance at scrimmage

LEWISTOWN — There was no final score, few if any statistical records and one team didn’t wear actual gameday numbers while the other didn’t have any numerals on its jerseys.

But Saturday’s football scrimmage between the Mifflin County Huskies and Juniata Indians at venerable Mitchell Field was still important to each squad.

Juniata head coach Kurt Condo said, “We wanted to come out this first scrimmage and see some of the missing links to last year. We have some spots to fill in so we came out with a game-plan mentality.

“We start the season with Selinsgrove,” Condo added. “We played them twice last year. We just wanted to get things clicking earlier than what we have been than the past couple seasons.”

Juniata came out with a game plan showing off their talents and executing with strong power running. Mifflin County had a hard time stopping the run game. The Indians tested the Huskies’ defense multiple times. Juniata quarterback Jason Condo also showed off his strong arm during the scrimmage.

On the other sidelines, Mifflin County head coach Shane Breon has his own game plan. “We did OK today,” Breon said. “Juniata is a good football team they have some big strong kids we hung in there we ran similar defenses it was back and forth with each other.”

Breon got some important repetitions for some players who the Huskies will rely heavily on this season, including quarterback Fletcher Wilson.

“Fletcher didn’t play much quarterback last year because he was starting on defense, so it’s a little bit of a transition for him,” Breon said. “(Chase) Hartung is a cool customer. I have faith in both of those kids we will evaluate them and do what we need to do.”

Chase Hartung was able to pick apart the Indians’ defense during the scrimmage, connecting on big-time passes to Cyrell Green and Landon Haigh. Breon hopes the experience will help Hartung shine in game situations this fall.

Wilson got some important reps as did Evan Naugle.

Lots of faces contributed on Mifflin County’s defense. Breon called it an all-team effort. Mifflin County’s Dupree Reed shadowed the Indians’ receivers during the scrimmage, while Haigh and Hunter Tipton both played well.

The Huskies’ Brendon Noerr was tasked with kicking and punting, showing off a strong leg during the scrimmage.

Both teams open the regular season on Friday as Juniata visits Selinsgrove and Mifflin County travel to Central Mountain.
