Milroy Presbyterian Church celebrates 190 years
MILROY — Milroy Presbyterian Church, 321 S. Main St., Milroy, will celebrate its 190th anniversary on Saturday, Nov. 9 and Sunday, Nov. 10.
Festivities on Saturday will run from 10 a.m. to noon, and will include a very brief church history, greetings from local officials and an opportunity to share memories of the congregation’s life over time. A historical display will show some of the highlights through the decades. Presbyterians were the first European settlers in the Kishacoquillas Valley, and the members and friends of the Milroy Presbyterian Church came from those pioneers and their descendants. Light refreshments will follow the ceremony on Saturday.
On Sunday at 9:30 a.m., the regular service of worship will have some special features from 1834, including portions of an 1834 sermon against “spiritous liquor,” (the first pastor was staunchly anti-alcohol and anti-slavery, beliefs that got him into trouble with the first church with which he served. The Milroy congregation agreed with him). The congregation will line out a Psalm in place of one of the usual hymns, and a Beadle will carry a staff with a knob at one end and a feather at the other. We invite the public to join our celebration.
