Suspect in police chase identified

BURNHAM — The suspect in a police chase from the beginning of September has been identified and faces several charges.

Giovanni Mannino, 24, was charged with fleeing or attempting to elude an officer, reckless driving, driving while operating privileges were suspended or revoked, driving an unregistered vehicle, as well as several other traffic related violations.

Mannino was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Kent A. Smith on Sept. 27.

According to the Affidavit of Probable Cause, Mifflin County Regional Police were on patrol in Derry Township on Sept. 10 when they observed a “red Yamaha motorcycle operated by a male…traveling on Green Avenue Extended.”

Police noted the motorcycle had “weave(d) across the double yellow lines into the oncoming lane” then weaved back back across the roadway. At this point, police initiated a traffic stop.

The suspect, later identified as Mannino, accelerated away, speeding through a stop sign, despite the emergency lights being activated. Police engaged in a high speed chase of the suspect.

The motorcycle sped through the intersection of Green Avenue and South Main Street, running another stop sign before turning onto South Main Street. The motorcycle passed a vehicle in a no passing zone and turned right on to Route 22 towards Lewistown Borough.

Police remained in a chase through West Water Street then South Dorcas Street and East Charles Street. The motorcycle continued on to Green Avenue Extended and made a right turn on to Jacks Creek Road.

The motorcycle eluded police through a number of traffic violations before heading straight on East Charles Street onto US Highway 322 Westbound, where the pursuit reached speeds of “approximately 120 to 130 miles per hour.”

After the Sand Mountain Road exit, the motorcycle “crossed over the grass median and started traveling on US Highway 322 Eastbound back towards Mifflin County.”

Police lost sight of the suspect as “traffic conditions were heavier Eastbound.”

After speaking to the Pennsylvania State Police at Lewistown, it was determined around 6:15 p.m. the suspect had stopped at a Sheetz for fuel, upon reviewing camera footage, Regional police were able to confirm that it was the same man from the pursuit.

Photographs were shared with Pennsylvania State Police at Huntingdon and a social media post was made via the Mifflin County Regional Police Facebook page in an attempt to identify the male.

On Sept. 19, an anonymous female advised the suspect was Mannino. This was later confirmed by police personnel who had “recently had an incident with Mannino and was able to positively identify that the male pictured was him.”

Mannino’s bail was set to $25,000 which he was unable to post. He is being held in Mifflin County Correctional Facility as he awaits a preliminary hearing set for Oct. 9.

Starting at $2.99/week.
