Prom shop to get makeover

THOMPSONTOWN — The Prom Shop in Juniata County is getting a bit of a makeover with its operation.

Formerly housed at Juniata High School in Mifflintown, the Prom Shop provided any Juniata County students in need of formal wear for their prom or other formal events free of charge.

Starting this fall, the Helping Hands of Juniata County will take over running the program and moving it to space in the former Delaware Elementary School, located on School Street in Thompsontown.

“The organizers at the Prom Shop at the high school approached the (Helping Hands) President Aleiha Rapp and the board agreed it would be a great addition to Helping Hands. A committee of volunteers was then formed to focus solely on the prom shop,” explained Maddie Armstrong, chair of the prom shop committee.

The annual Prom Shop had been created and operated by the Juniata High School Student Council. It was open during school hours for Juniata students and a limited number of hours for students in other schools.

They accepted donations for prom dresses and formal wear for both girls and boys.

“We are thrilled that they are taking it over, and hopefully they will be able to reach more students in the county, said Angela Bryner, teacher and student council advisor at Juniata High School. “They are a great organization, who is helping everyone.”

The new shop plans to continue accepting donations. “We will announce when we’re taking appts for the prom shop,” Armstrong said. “They’ll take place at the office on school street in Thompsontown.

Neighboring counties can also shop at the popup shop. “We’ll have hours in December through April when the proms are,” Armstrong added.
