Dwight D. Kirkland, 52, of Mifflintown, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2014 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
He was born Oct. 18, 1961, in Dallas, Texas, the son of William and Louise (Johnson) Kirkland, of Arizona.
Dwight is survived by: his wife, Kay (Bigelow) Kirkland, whom he married in 2002, their children, Aubrey and Nickolas Kirkland, at home; a sister, Rachel Fielder, of Washington; a brother, William Kirkland, of Colorado; as well as Kathryn and Wayne Leister, of Vira, John and Marcy Bigelow, of Lewistown, Mike and Deb Bigelow, of Lewistown, and John and LouAnn Bigelow of Pulaski, New York; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, David Kirkland.
Dwight was a graduate of Orchard Park High School, New York, and The Art Institute of Atlanta.
He was self employed as a commercial artist, owning Black Leaf Studio, LLC. He painted various types of artwork, illustrations and murals all across the country. He is known locally for his murals in downtown Lewistown, including the Victory Park Veterans Memorial Mural, the History of Theatre Mural and much more.
Dwight lived in many places over the years, but loved this area and its people and was very happy to settle here and call it his home.
He was an awesome father and husband. His love for his family was tremendous and he will be greatly missed.
Dwight was a proud member of the Juniata Valley Chamber of Commerce and was planning to assist Cub Scout Pack 46 of Port Royal this fall.
Private services will be held at the discretion of the family. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 30, at the MCIDC Building, 6395 state Route 103 North, Lewistown.
Memorial contributions in Dwight's name may be given to Aubrey and Nicholas c/o Standard Steel Credit Union, 101 First Ave., Burnham.
