Editor's note: This is the third part of a letter submitted by Belleville resident Don Wright expressing his opinion regarding President Barack Obama's use of executive powers. Part two of this letter appeared on Friday's Opinion page.
To the editor:
High crimes and misdemeanors is an area covered in the Constitution that also allows for mandates and impeachment.
The charge of high crimes and misdemeanors covers allegations of misconduct peculiar to officials, such as perjury of oath, abuse of authority, bribery, intimidation, misuse of assets, failure to supervise, dereliction of duty, conduct unbecoming, and refusal to obey a lawful order. Offenses by officials also include ordinary crimes, but perhaps with different standards of proof and punishment than for nonofficials, on the grounds that more is expected of officials by their oaths of office.
The President has stated on numerous occasions that if Congress does not do what he wants that he will rule by "executive order." The President is in charge of the Executive Branch - failure to supervise, IRS scandal, Benghazi, releasing five dangerous terrorists in captivity for an Army deserter on his order, refusing to honor his oath of office in regard to the Defense of Marriage Act, NSA spying, etc. Pages upon pages would be needed to list all of the administration's and President's "dubious" actions.
We now have for all practical purposes a "Dictator-In-Chief" resident in the White House. Congress is afraid to act for fear they may galvanize Obama's voting block this fall. Republicans wish to retain and gain more power so they refuse to act. They have failed in their duty to the people of this nation to impeach this President. Instead, Speaker Boehner and the Republicans have stated they are going to "sue" him in court for excessive use of his "power!" This will achieve nothing and "Constitutionally" falls outside of legal remedies to address this President's alleged crimes.
We are in very perilous times. We have a Congress that will not act, a Supreme Court that has been compromised and federal courts that have been filled with ideologically aligned clones of Obama. The very safety and security of the nation is now threatened by the very man who is sworn to defend it.
This nation was created with the understanding that the federal government would provide secure and defensible borders and the security of its citizens. Last year, President Obama and his administration released over 30,000 illegal alien criminals back to our streets ... This in and of itself clearly indicates that this President has failed to protect the citizens of this nation (See editor's note 1).
The greatest threat to this President's dictatorial ambitions lies with our Second Amendment: "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
However, this amendment is under daily threat. The president and his allies have signed on board with the U.N.'s Small Arms Treaty. If this treaty is ratified by the Senate (it was only narrowly defeated last year) it would effectively put Americans' rights to keep and bear firearms under the control of the United Nations. This would in effect signal the end of private gun ownership in this country and would remove the last impediment to this President's goal to fully and radically transform this nation. At present, the number of armed men and women who routinely enter the woods each year to hunt totals around 50 million. When you add the millions of veterans to this number, it becomes larger than all of the world's armies combined! This amendment is all that stands against him (See editor's note 2).
Too many hunters are not even aware of the administration's daily attempts to find new ways to abolish this last guarantee of a free state. Many feel that gun confiscation could never happen here. However, if you were to look at the other English speaking nations of the world, Great Britain, New Zealand and Australia, you would find that it has already happened there!
In summary, I fear that due to Obama's rapid demoralizing and destruction of our military (handing out pink slips to thousands of officers at a time when most of the world is seeing warfare and our national and vital interests are threatened) to pre-World War II levels we are inviting aggression and setting the stage for another world war. Nature abhors a vacuum and our effective withdrawal from the world's stage has opened the door for Russia, China, Iran and all of the world's terrorist states to fill it.
Our national debt that he so callously continues to expand can never be repaid. Our nation now buys its own debt and continues to print and pump out billions of worthless dollars into the economy. The only beneficiary of this foolish policy is Wall Street. This action devalues our currency - dollars buy less every year.
Our children are being deliberately corrupted with tainted "alternative" life style lessons and "Common Core" in preparation for the future dreamed of "Socialist States of America." The "dumbing down" of the next generation is well under way. It is time that Americans stand up against this deliberate assault on all that we hold dear. We must oppose tyranny and unite in common cause. We must be prepared to oppose this government of despots with force if necessary. It is the right of all Americans to do this - in fact, it is their duty.
Editor's note 1: In March 2014, the Associated Press and other media outlets reported the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency had released about 5,000 out of the 30,733 illegal immigrants it held in custody. The White House described the released individuals as "low risk, non-criminal detainees."
Editor's note 2: Estimates of the number of gun-owning hunters in the United States vary greatly - most pro-hunting and pro-gun sources cite the number as between 40 to 50 million, while most anti-gun sources claim the number is much lower at about 13 million.
Statistics from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs indicate that more than 21 million veterans of all ages are currently living in the United States - about 11 million are ages 20-64, while the other 10 million are age 65 and older.
