Clyde M. ‘Maurice’ Lyter

Clyde M. "Maurice" Lyter, 91, of Lewistown, died at 9:10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, 2014, at Meadow View Manor, McVeytown.

Born Aug. 26, 1922, in Oliver Township, he was a son of the late Clyde P. and Margaret (Pecht) Lyter.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary (Nolan) Lyter, on Nov. 15, 2004.

He is survived by: a son, Steven J. Lyter and wife, Phillis, of Lewistown; a daughter, Peggy Whiteman and husband, Thomas, of Pearce, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Jennifer Lyter, of California, Sarah Lyter, of Philadelphia, William W. Lyter, of Lewistown, and Renee Snyder and husband, David, of Virginia; one great-grandson, Aaron Snyder; siblings, Jean Weikle and companion, Harold Wright, of McClure, Grace Wieder, of New York, Audrey Ritter, of McClure, Wayne Lyter and wife, Virgie, of Florida, and Earl Lyter and wife, Margaret, of Beaver Springs.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and received the Purple Heart when his boat, the USS PC 125, sank off the coast of Okinawa.

Maurice was a foreman in the spinning department at FMC until 1972. He retired from Standard Steel in 1986.

He was a member of VFW Post No. 7011 and was a Methodist by faith, attending McVeytown United Methodist Church.

Maurice was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and bowling.

A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2014, at Heller-Hoenstine Funeral Homes Inc., Woodlawn, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown, with Pastor Pat Bollinger officiating.

A viewing will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home.

Interment with VFW Post No. 7011 honors will take place in Juniata Memorial Park.

Memorial donations may be made in Clyde's name to McVeytown United Methodist Church, Queen St., McVeytown, PA 17051 or to Meadowview Manor, 2103 U.S Highway 522 South, McVeytown, PA 17051.
