BELLEVILLE - Jack Z. Swyers, 98, formerly of Belleville, passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at River Terrace Estates, Bluffton, Ind.
Born on May 24, 1916, in Lewistown, he was the son of the late Blanchard and Zella M. (Zerbe) Swyers.
Jack married Violet Marie Wilson on Aug. 11, 1940, in Hagerstown, Md. She preceded him in death on Nov. 20, 2004.
He was a 1935 graduate of Lewistown High School and was a member of First United Methodist Church. Jack served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a pharmacist mate, third class, in Bainbridge, Md. After high school, he graduated from Lewistown Business School.
Earlier in life, he was an assistant manager for G.C. Murphy Co. in Bluffton from 1957 to 1959, and later, manager for G.C. Murphy Store in Lewistown, retiring in 1981.
Jack was an avid horseshoe player and was responsible for establishing horseshoe courts in several communities wherever his family had been residing at the time. In 1981, he was inducted into the Pennsylvania Horseshoe Hall of Fame. He was active in the Senior Olympics, charter member of East Baseball Team, LHS Basketball 1935 and member of the Rotary Club.
He is survived by: two daughters, Zella (David) Butler, of Bluffton, and Debbie (Randy) Clifton, of Middletown, Ohio; six grandchildren, David (Carol) Butler, of Bluffton, Stephen (Michele) Butler, of Ossian, Mark (Stacy) Butler, of Fort Wayne, Ann (Rob) Barker, of Winona Lake, Kelly (Jim) Malony of Beloit, Wis., and Amy (Joe) Valdez, of Kansas City, Kansas; 12 great-grandchildren, Adam and Robin Butler, Evan, Kristen and Olivia Butler, Collin Crandal, Jacob and Sarah Barker, and Sean, Andrew, Joshua and Brendan Malony; four stepgrandchildren and eight step-great-grandchildren, all of Middletown, Ohio; nieces, Barb (David) Adams, of Goshen, Ind., Delores Houser and Susan McFarland Royer, both of Lewistown; and a nephew, Thomas McFarland, of Lewistown.
Jack was preceded in death by: a daughter, Bonnie Cheadle; two sisters, Martha Biglow and Janet McFarland; and a granddaughter, Jaqueline Marie Cheadle.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Karen McCachren officiating.
A visitation will be held from 10 to11 a.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home.
Interment will take place in St. Mark's Cemetery, Lewistown.
