BELLEVILLE - Mary V. R. (Smoker) Baker, 97, died at 5:45 p.m. Monday, June 16, 2014, at Valley View Haven, Belleville.
Born June 18, 1916, in Belleville, she was the daughter of the late Ezra and Mary (Bulick) Smoker. Her husband, W.R. "Casey" Baker, whom she married on Jan. 26, 1943, preceded her in death Oct. 20, 1976.
Surviving are: her daughter, Mary Carol Eckley and husband, Harold S., of Allensville; her sibling, Fern Smoker, of Mill Creek; grandchildren, Trevor S. Eckley and wife, Tara, of Allensville, Andrew J. Eckley and wife, Janelle, of Belleville; and great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Hunter, Jada and Clara.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruby Harmon and Janet Stuck.
Mary graduated from Belleville High School in 1934.
She worked as a telephone operator in Belleville and retired from R. S. Vogt Garment Factory in Allensville. Prior to her marriage, she and Casey hung wallpaper and painted together.
She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, a member of the WELCA Ladies group at church and a former member of the Ladie's Auxillary of the VFW Post No. 5935 in Belleville. She served on the election board and was a volunteer at Valley View Haven Ohesson Manor.
Mary enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 20, 2014, at Henderson Funeral Home, Belleville, with the Rev. Rosalie N. Smith officiating. Burial will take place at Allensville Presbyterian Cemetery. Her family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, and 9:30 a.m. until the time of service Friday at the funeral home.
