LEWISTOWN - John A. Bowen Jr., 85, of Lewistown, died at 9:34 a.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2014, in the emergency room of Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital.
Born on Jan. 13, 1929, in Yeagertown, he was a son of the late John A. Sr., and Erie Elgarda (Turbett) Bowen.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda F. Bowen, on March 29, 1999, and a son-in-law, James Shirey.
John is survived by: daughters, Debra George and husband, Jack, of Harrisburg, and Holly Jo Shirey, of York; one grandchild one great- grandchild; half sister, Jean Rollingcloud; and his fiancee, Jeanne Jackson, of Lewistown.
He was a 1948 graduate of Lewistown High School.
John served in the National Guard for 21 years, Korean War, RTU unit, for 11 years, retiring after 32 years from the Army as a colonel.
He was vice president of operations and labor working for 37 years at Noerr's Trucking and UPS for eight years.
John was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Elks Club and Masonic Brothers. He attended Command General Staff Schools at Fort Sill, Okla., Fort Knox, Ky., Fort Lee, Va., and Fort Leavenworth, Kan.
He enjoyed golfing and was an outdoorsman.
A memorial (Masonic) service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 28, 2014, at Hoenstine Funeral Home, 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Revs. Rick Bender and John Walters officiating. Interment with VFW honors will take place in Juniata Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, at the funeral home.
