Karl Edward ‘Eddie’ Guss

MIFFLINTOWN - Karl Edward "Eddie" Guss, 86, died Saturday, April 12, 2014, at his home in Mifflintown.

Born Jan. 4, 1928, in Mifflintown, he was a son of the late Karl B. and Susan Grace (Heisey) Guss.

He is survived by: his wife of 56 years, Margaret (Fenstermacher) Guss, whom he married Sept. 7, 1957; two daughters, Barbara G. Partner and her husband, Scott, of Mifflintown, and Gerri G. Thomas and her husband, Geoff, of Wright, Wyo.; five grandchildren, Shannon Thomas, of Tucson, Ariz. and her fiance, Mark Adams, of Wright, Wyo., Bryan Partner and his wife, Amber, of Oxford, Ohio, Katlyn Thomas, of Cheyenne, Wyo., Rachel Partner, of Mifflintown, and Cameron Thomas, of Wright, Wyo.; one sister, Suzanne G. Heckert, of Lutherville, Md. and one brother, Earl M. "Mit" Guss and his wife, Maggie, of Billings, Mont.

Eddie graduated from Juniata Joint High School in 1945 and attended Susquehanna University and Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science. He became a licensed funeral director in 1949, and worked at Guss Funeral Home with his father, who had established the business in 1924. He was the sole proprietor and director of the funeral home from 1956 until his daughter, Barbara, became licensed and joined him in the business in 1981 and they have worked together since.

He was a compassionate man, dedicated to his family and his profession, who spent his life serving his community to the best of his ability.

He was a veteran of the United States Army and served at Fort Lewis, Washington, from March 15, 1946 to Sept. 19, 1947, and at Valley Forge Army Hospital from Nov. 30, 1950 to Sept. 19, 1951.

He was past-master of Union Lodge No. 324 F&AM and a member of various other Masonic and civic organizations.

In the 1950s and 1960s, he drove bus for Potter's Garage, Mifflintown. He enjoyed reading and spent many hours drinking coffee at the local restaurants. He and his family enjoyed camping and traveling, but he was always anxious to return to Mifflintown. He tried to include his family in everything that he did and his grandchildren have very special memories of him.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 19, 2014, at Guss Funeral Home Inc., 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown, with the Rev. Mike Sigler officiating. Interment will be in Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 18, 2014, at the funeral home.
