LEWISTOWN - PA CareerLink Mifflin County is seeking volunteers to work one-on-one with students to improve reading, writing, speaking, basic math skills or to learn English as a second language. Ideal candidates enjoy working with learners in one-on-one settings and have a desire to help others.

Career Pathways classes available
LEWISTOWN - TIU Community Education Services, based at PA CareerLink Mifflin County, offers Career Pathways classes daily.
Classes are free to the public and support participants' goals of employment or transition to post-secondary education. Career Pathways provides educational opportunities including improvement of basic skills, WorkKeys certification and preparation for the GED test.
Classes are a combination of classroom instruction and independent computer-based learning. Students and instructors work together to develop an educational plan that is tailored to meet the needs of the individual based on goals and assessment results. SUMCD accepting Head Start applications
LEWISTOWN - Snyder Union Mifflin Child Development Inc. is now accepting applications for enrollment in the Head Start and Early Head Start programs in Mifflin County.
Early Head Start serves pregnant woman and expectant families as well as families with children under the age of 3. Head Start serves children ages 3-5.
Families with an income at or below the federal poverty level are eligible for services. Families with income slightly above poverty level and parents who are recently unemployed may be eligible. All interested parents are encouraged to apply.
Individualized services include education, early childhood development, family engagement and medical, dental, mental health and nutrition.

Scholarship for young men available
HARRISBURG - The Scottish Rite Valley of Harrisburg of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction is accepting applications for the 2014 Leon M. Abbott Scholarship program. The program provides financial support for the continuing education of young men and women from Scottish Rite families and Masonic-related youth groups.
To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must meet any of the following qualifications:
A Scottish Rite Mason of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction;
A child of a Northern Masonic Jurisdiction member who is a high school senior currently enrolled at an accredited college or university and has maintained a GPA of 2.75; or
A member of DeMolay, Rainbow or Job's Daughters in the jurisdiction who has maintained a minimum GPA of 2.75.
The application is available from the Supreme Council website under member downloads at www.scottishritenmj.org. Complete two copies of the form and mail it to the Valley of Harrisburg Secretary, 2701 N. Third St., P.O. Box 2434, Harrisburg, PA, 17105-2423. The deadline for submission is April 1.
Girl Scouts to extend cookie sale
LEWISTOWN - Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania, the council that serves the central and northeastern regions in the state, is extending its annual Girls Scout cookie sale, which will now end on March 23.
Program to help young adults in job search
LEWISTOWN - The GET2WORK Program is available to help young adults between ages of 18-21 who are having trouble finding a job. Participants will receive help with applications, cover letters, resumes, job development and work experience.

Lewistown reinstates street sweeping
LEWISTOWN - The Borough of Lewistown will reinstate regular street sweeping and maintenance schedules as of midnight April 1.
All parking restrictions and regulations, as posted by local signs, which were suspended from Nov. 25, 2013, through March 31, will again become effective and enforced.
