LEWISTOWN - Success By 6 is a United Way Initiative that serves the community by coordinating school districts, state level educators and early childhood professionals. This service exists as a public connector with the goal of sending fully prepared children into local kindergarten classrooms. The initiative is nationally endorsed by the United Way, supporting an early education connection on a widespread scale.
Families sign up to receive Success By 6 summer packets at kindergarten registration. Approximately 90 percent of parents take advantage of this resource each year, making the proactive choice to prepare their children for the world of education.
Informational packets are mailed to these households in June, July and August. More than 500 summer mailings were delivered in 2013 to Mifflin and Juniata counties. Families receive a storybook each month, as well as activity sheets, checklists and orientation information. Each piece is geared toward learning and awareness, laying the groundwork for that first day of school.
In 2013, Success By 6 hosted instructive workshops for 35 local families in partnership with the Mifflin County School District. While parents undergo an informative session with education specialists, the children engage in activities centered on literacy and math. In cooperation with Juniata County School District, Success By 6 will offer "Going Bananas for School Nights" this spring. The evenings include an opportunity for families to meet kindergarten teachers and participate in school readiness activities.
Success By 6 Coordinator Cristy Yoders remains committed to this initiative, recognizing the importance of seeing children who are "ready to go to kindergarten, knowing they'll be more confident and in turn will be more successful in school."
