WILLIAMSPORT - Alex Lieberman is a defending District 4 Class AA wrestling champion, but the Midd-West senior knows winning again will be a difficult task.
The 171-pound Lieberman took the first step Friday night toward a repeat with a solid 8-3 decision over Hughesville's Robert White in the quarterfinals of this year's tournament in the Williamsport High gym.
Lieberman jumped to a solid lead with a takedown and backpoints.
"It was good to get the lead. He was a strong kid," Lieberman said. The Mustang explained that this year's weight class is better than last year's.
Lieberman will face Brandon Conrad of Bloomsburg in today's semifinals. The finals are set for 5:30 p.m. The top five in each weight class advance to next weekend's Regional Tournament at the same site.
Lieberman is joined in the semis by 132-pounder Tanner Ebright, who got a break when his quarterfinal opponent withdrew with a medical forfeit. Also advancing to the semis was 220-pounder Zach Longacre, who got a fall in the quarters.
Four other Mustangs are still eligible to qualify through the consolations.
Midd-West coach Clint Swartz said the team's goal is to get as many through as possible.
"We want to win one, then another," he said.
The other Mustangs still alive are Corey Stauffer at 113, Dalton Klinger at 120, Alex Tittle at 160 and Adam Zerby at 285.
