THOMPSONTOWN - John A. "Jack' "Captain Jack" Allen Jr., 86, of Thompsontown, entered into his eternal rest on Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, at his home, surrounded by his family.
Born Sept. 28, 1927, in Millerstown, he was a son of the late John A. and Margaret (Himes) Allen, Sr.
He is survived by: his wife of 61 years, Leota (McGowan) Allen, whom he married Aug. 27, 1952; three children, Richard L. Allen Sr. and wife, Loretta, of Thompsontown, Jill A. Allen, of White Hall, and Kimberly S. Allen and companion, Ryan Oberdick, of Stroudsburg; four grandchildren, Richard L. Allen Jr., Jason Allen, Melissa Allen, and Shayne Walz; one step grandson, Danny; and two great-grandsons, Chase and Chance Allen.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Jacalyn Ann Allen, and his sister, Mary Arlene Rheem.
Jack had worked for Breyer's Ice Cream Co.
He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Thompsontown, where he regularly rang the church bell.
He enjoyed camping, hiking, boating on the Juniata River, and listening to talking books. He loved music and played the drums with the Melotones, Tom Quinn and the Melody Kings, The Caravans and Kenny C and the Craters.
His service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 19 N. Mill Street, Thompsontown with the Rev. Mike Sigler officiating. Interment will be in the Thompsontown Union Cemetery.
There will be a viewing from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27, at Guss Funeral Home, Inc., 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown, and Tuesday at the church one hour prior to the services.
