YEAGERTOWN - The Derry Township Supervisors granted a request for a train display to be stored in the Kishacoquillas Park classroom, during a meeting Monday night.
The storage request came from Ed Forsythe, who sets up a train display for the Shining Lights In the Darkness event. Forsythe said he is asking out of convenience in taking this down and setting it up every year.
"It would be easier for me to let it set-up," Forsythe said. "Having it set up all year round would also allow me to work on it a little bit each year to make it better for the event."
He said if it could leave it there set up all of the time, he would be willing to run some trains during other events that would be held at the park. The supervisors were concerned about the insurance and the possibility of the items getting ruined if the building were to flood. Forsythe said the items that would be stored in the building have little value, and the trains would be there only when they are being run on the display. Council member Ronald Napikoski said he believes this would be a potential benefit to the community.
"I think this could be overall benefit for the community," Napikoski said. "If he is willing to sign an agreement about this, I think it should be okay to keep there."
Forsythe would have to provide the necessary equipment when other groups use the building, but he said there would be no problem with that. The supervisors voted to allow the display to be stored there, with the condition that if the building is needed the display is removed; again this met with no objections from Forsythe.
The supervisors also heard a final update from Darla Gray, a representative from Shining Lights In the Darkness, on the amount of supporters during the event.
"We had 30 churches, 12 not-for-profits, 64 businesses, 15 different entertainers, and 173 individual volunteers, helping throughout the duration of the event," Gray said.
She also said the event saw about 11,450 people coming out to see the lights display. Gray thanked the supervisors for their support and the use of the facilities. She also provided them with a deposit to reserve the park for this year's event, as well as a postcard with some information.
Also discussed at the meeting:
A letter was given to the family of the late Barry L. Marker, thanking him for his 17 years of service to Derry Township Sanitary Sewer Authority Board
Jamie Fickes presented the board with a park-use idea for a business vendor event that would allow community members to meet local small businesses
The board is going to be moving forward with a dog park due to a grant; additional funding could come from the county planning commission for this venture
Approved to donate $750 to the Derry Township Fire Police
The Derry Township Board of Supervisors meets at 5:30 p.m. on the first and third Monday of each month at the Derry Township building, the next meeting will be on Feb. 3.
