To the editor:
There have been a series of misleading letters in the editorial section of local papers stating 32,000 people a year killed by guns. Killed, not murdered.
FBI stats show from 2007 to 2011 total murders, by any means, never broke 15,000 a year. Gun murders ran 10,129 in 2007 to a low of 8,583 in 2011. I guess murders, suicides, accidents, military action and self defense was all added up and maybe, just maybe, the number was blown up a little bigger than reality.
I don't blame the writers of such ballooned numbers, it is almost impossible to get real number off the Internet. Please check it out on the FBI or the US Dept. of Justice web sites.
It is still a lot of people killed by guns, but the worst areas to live for violent crimes always have the strictest gun laws.
