Augustus Y. ‘Gus’ Noojin Jr.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. - Augustus Y. "Gus" Noojin Jr. passed away on Jan. 8, 2014, in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., where he lived for the last ten years. He was born in 1917, in Birmingham, Ala., and was 96 at the time of his death.

Gus was a star football player in both high school and college and was inducted into the Birmingham Southern College Sports Hall of Fame in 1991. He served in World War II as a Naval officer.

Gus began his career with Cluett Peabody & Co. Inc., the maker of Arrow shirts, in Lewistown. Over time, he served as president of several Cluett subsidiaries. During his time with Cluett, he earned two U.S. patents.

After retirement, he lived in Sarasota, Fla., for twenty years, before moving to Ponte Vedra Beach.

He is survived by: Mary Noojin, his wife of 73 years, who resides at Vicar's Landing, in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; his two children, Martine Noojin Slemp (John) of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., and Gus Noojin (Sandy), of Houston, Texas; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A private service was held with the family at Palms Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville Beach, Fla.
