MIFFLINTOWN - A Newport man was arraigned at Magisterial District Judge Barb Lyter's office on Wednesday afternoon on charges of raping an unconscious woman and related offenses.
Gabe E. Sheaffer, 19, is alleged to have assaulted a woman at a party on June 9, 2013, on Bowersox Lane, Susquehanna Township, police said.
The alleged victim contacted the Pennsylvania State Police Lewistown and reported a man she knew only as "Gabe" raped her at the party, court documents indicate.
Police said the alleged victim reported she had been drinking alcohol the night of the assault and was helped into bed by a friend. At some point she awoke and realized there was a male on top of her having sex with her.
She initially thought it was a friend of hers that came to the party with her, but then realized it was not and she asked where her clothes were.
According to court documents, the alleged victim froze during the course of the assault and at one point fell off the bed, only to have the assailant pull her back on the bed and continue to assault her.
Police said they were able to identify Sheaffer through the intercept of text messages sent to an acquaintance.
According to court documents, the alleged victim fell asleep with her clothes on, however Sheaffer said the alleged victim was already naked when he got in to the bed with her. Sheaffer stated that the alleged victim started to initiate the sexual contact.
In addition to the charge of rape of an unconscious victim, Sheaffer is also charged with two counts each of aggravated indecent assault and indecent assault.
Sheaffer remains free on $25,000 unsecured bail, a preliminary hearing is tentatively scheduled for Jan. 29 at Lyter's office.
