HARRISBURG Juniata High School senior Clancein Donough, of Port Royal, won first place and received $500 on Saturday during the PA Preferred Chocolate Cake Contest at the 2014 Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg.
Donough created a Cookies-n-Cream inspired chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream frosting and shaved candy bar coating. His cake originally won at the McClure Bean Soup Festival and Fair in 2013.

The second place cake was created by Sharon Karlheim of Patton, Cambria County, third place went to Christy Wiltrout of Scottdale, Fayette County. Sharon Moser of Oley Township, Berks County placed fourth and Julie Heine from York, York County, fifth.
All cakes had to win first place in a county fair and include two PA Preferred products.
Six judges sampled 74 cakes. The judges included Chris Fickes from Franklin, Tenn.; Connie Shuff, York, York County; John Berne, Crosby, McKean County; Don Keneske, Kane, McKean County; Bob English, Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County; and Kelly Heffner, Harrisburg, Dauphin County.
Donough's winning recipe appears below.
PA Preferred Deep Dark Chocolate Cake Recipe:
2 cups sugar
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup HERSHEY'S cocoa
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup milk
1/2 cup vegetable oil
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup boiling water
Heat oven to 350. Grease and flour two 9-inch round baking pans or 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking pan. In large mixer bowl combine sugar, flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Add eggs, milk, oil and vanilla; beat on medium speed for two minutes. Remove from mixer; stir in boiling water (batter will be thin). Pour into prepared pan(s). Bake 30 to 35 minutes for round pans, 35 to 40 minutes for rectangular pan, or until wooden pick inserted in center.
Vanilla Buttercream Frosting
1/3 cup butter or margarine, softened
4 cups powdered sugar, divided
3 to 4 tablespoons milk
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Beat butter with electric mixer on medium speed in large bowl until creamy. With mixer running, gradually add about 2 cups powdered sugar, beating until well blended. Slowly beat in milk and vanilla. Gradually add remaining powdered sugar, beating until smooth. Add additional milk, if necessary, until frosting is desired consistency.
Fill cooled cake with frosting and cookies. Cover sides with grated Cookies 'n' Cream candy. Top with confectioner sugar and peanut butter crumbs.
