MIFFLIN - David J. Kirkland, 62, of 1068 Groninger Valley Road, Mifflin, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013.
He was born on May 23, 1951, in Durham, N.C., to William B. and Beulah Louise (Johnson) Kirkland, both of New Mexico.
Surviving are: his wife, Delphine D. (Rivers) Kirkland, whom he married in November 1978; two daughters, Ambika D. Kirkland, of Sarbrucken, Germany, and Chandra R. Kirkland, of Catonsville, Md.; three sons, Rohan A. Kirkland, of Mifflin, Oren S. Kirkland, of Jamaica Queens, N.Y., and Shaman A. Kirkland, of Mifflin; two brothers, William Kirkland, of Michigan, and Dwight Kirkland, of Mifflintown; and one sister, Rachel Kirkland, of Vancouver, Wash.

David was the owner and operator of Back Home Trading Company, Mifflintown, and traveled around the state in a school bus selling baskets and other home decor. He also was a local guitar instructor. Earlier in his life, he was a carpenter.
He was known for his guitar playing, and most recently as part of the band, Blue Heron.
There will be a musical tribute and celebration of his life and music held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, at the Laurel Rock Farms on Arch Rock Road, Juniata County.
