LEWISTOWN - Deb and Erven Priest, of Yeagertown, have always been there for their son Mark.
When he was first diagnosed with an arachnoid cyst, they made sure he saw the doctor regularly. As his condition slowly deteriorated, they helped him find treatment. And now, with the surgical removal of the cyst complete, they are holding a fundraising event to pay for his medical expenses.
"At first, Mark said he couldn't have the surgery because there was no way he could afford it," Deb said. "But we encouraged him to pursue it because we knew he needed it. We were able to raise $10,000 before the surgery, and now we have to raise $25,000 to pay for the rest."
The Priest family is holding a Chinese auction fundraising event at 5 p.m. on Dec. 20 at the Brooklyn Hose Co. in Lewistown. All proceeds will go toward the Mark E. Priest Benefit Fund to help pay for the cost of surgery and remaining medical expenses.
"We know it's close to Christmas, but you might be able to win some nice items," Deb said. "Plus you would be helping a good cause."
The event features more than 80 items for auction including gift cards and unique goods from local restaurants and stores. There will also be food, drinks and baked goods for sale.
Donations may also be made at Kish Bank to the Mark E. Priest Benefit Fund. For more information, contact Deb Priest at 248-0934 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Information is also available through the Mark Priest Benefit Fund Facebook group.
