To the editor:
Since Penn State opened a learning center in downtown Lewistown in the Regional Business Center (the old Danks Department Store) more than 10 years ago to bring its educational programs closer to home for residents, the Penn State Lewistown Center has grown steadily into a strong facility for higher education in the Juniata Valley. The relationships we have built and the educational programs we have offered are enabling residents to prepare for jobs in this region and beyond.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank local leaders and the Juniata Valley community for the continuing support you have provided to the Penn State Lewistown Center, which today is helping 270 residents prepare for new careers or for career advancement through higher education.
Throughout our history in downtown Lewistown, we have had nearly 3,000 course enrollments by part-time adult students taking a wide range of professional certificates, associate and bachelor's degree programs. Our newest degree program is the associate degree in medical laboratory technology, which enables residents to prepare for this career close to home, including doing their clinical training at Lewistown Hospital, Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, or J.C. Blair Hospital.
The successes we have achieved are the result of our partnerships with the community. Our partnership with the Geisinger Lewistown Hospital and its School of Nursing is enabling nursing students to get the general education and science courses they need for their Registered Nurse diploma. Our partnership with the Mifflin-Juniata Career and Technology Center's Practical Nursing Program helps provide its students with quality clinical training experiences in the simulation classroom at the Penn State Lewistown Center. Other partnerships include the dual enrollment program for high school juniors and seniors with the Mifflin County School District, and helping adults to prepare for college with the Tuscarora Intermediate Unit 11.
We are grateful for these growing partnerships and the continued support we receive from the community.
Penn State's commitment to making higher education accessible to residents of the Juniata Valley remains strong. We look forward to continuing to enhance our programs and services to meet the higher education needs of the Juniata Valley.
