To the editor:
Now that the downtown streetscape is complete, I feel obligated to comment. As a person who has worked 40 years as a landscape designer, I was pleased with the look of the project until the final phase. The planter boxes do not match the other furnishings or anything else on the street. Placement of the planters is awkward and in some cases obstructs the flow of pedestrian traffic. The selection of plant material is questionable. Rhododendron, Japanese maple and pachysandra will not thrive on an open urban site, regardless of the amount of care they are given.
Which brings up other questions: Who will maintain the planters? The borough does not have the time or expertise to deal with them. Why did the designers burden the borough with this task? This part of the project needs to be re-evaluated.
