HOLLIDAYSBURG - Homer Ellsworth Wert, 91, passed away at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at Hollidaysburg Veterans Home, Duncansville.
Born on May 5, 1922, in New Lancaster Valley, he was the last of 13 children born to the late Solomon and Clara (Dean) Wert. The family had resided in New Lancaster Valley.
He was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters: Anna Wert, Mabel Croft, Lewis Wert, Clayton Wert, Margret Wert, Esther Wert, Henry Wert, Eleanor Wert, Hazel Wert, Mildred Wert, Edward Wert, and Veron Wert.
He is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Wert entered the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1939. In 1940, he entered the U.S. Army and served during World War II where he was awarded the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with bronze star, distinguished unit badge, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, American Defense Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. He then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was awarded the German Occupation Medal, serving until 1954. After his discharge, he worked as a pressman and was a member of the Amalgamated Lithographers of America Local One, New York, N.Y.
After retiring he spent the next 15 years living in Camp Hill. He spent his last six years under the care of his niece, Sue Schomer, of State College.
Graveside services with military honors for Mr. Wert will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, at Salem Cemetery in New Lancaster Valley with the Rev. James Schomer officiating.
