From staff reports
BELLEVILLE - Belleville Mennonite played its first game under its new name Friday.
But in the opening round of the Thunder's boys soccer kickoff tournament, it was Halifax who reigned. The Wildcats took a 5-0 win against the hosts, who will play Meadowbrook Christian in the consolation game today at 11 a.m.
Penns Valley, a 3-1 winner over Meadowbrook, will play Halifax for the title.
Alex McMullen had a hat trick for Halifax, but it was Ryan Brennan who scored the crucial first goal just minutes into the game.
"You've got to start somewhere and it's our year to play Halifax first," Thunder coach Brian Renno said. "I thought the goal we gave up early was a little bit of a disappointment and that kind of set the stage."
Renno said the Thunder (0-1) played better after the break.
Midd-West 4, Millville 0
MILLVILLE - Midd-West opened the season on the winning side as the Mustangs blanked Millville 4-0 in the opening round of the Quakers' tournament.
Tyler Arbogast scored twice in the win - once on a penalty kick - and Landry Harman had a pair of assists.
Midd-West coach Chris Sauer said he was pleased to see improvement from the preseason.
"We struggled offensively in our scrimmages," he said. "We created a lot of opportunities but we weren't finishing well."
The Mustangs (1-0) will play Warrior Run in the final at 6 p.m. today.
Carlisle 5, Mifflin County 0
LEWISTOWN - Mifflin County had no answer for Carlisle in a Commonwealth Division tennis match Friday.
The visiting Thundering Herd won four of five matches in straight sets, with the lone victory for the Huskies coming in the first doubles, where Kate Arnold and Chessa Wright won the second of three sets.
Mifflin County (1-4) travels to State College Wednesday.
