BELLEVILLE - Joseph E. Kurtz, 84, of 254 Rockville Road, Belleville, died at 7:20 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, 2013, at his home.
Born April 15, 1929, in Belleville, he was a son of the late Enos K. and Mary (Sharp) Kurtz. His wife, Julia A. (Byler) Kurtz, whom he married on Nov. 12, 1953, preceded him in death on June 6, 2013.
He is survived by: children, Julia A. Hostetler and husband, David, of Belleville, Tura M. Hostetler and husband, Raymond, of Belleville, Enos J. Kurtz and wife, Lucy, of Adams, N.Y., Joseph E. Kurtz and wife, Sylvia, of Mannsville, N.Y., and Rachel L. Peachey and husband, David G., of Belleville; sister, Amanda Yoder and husband, Noah A., of Lewisburg; 39 grandchildren; and 17 great- grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by: an infant son, Samuel Kurtz; a daughter, Dorothy J. Kurtz; a stillborn granddaughter, Sara Hostetler; two brothers, Crist and John Kurtz; and five sisters, Elsie Yoder, Sadie Peachey, Lena Kauffman, Mary Zook and Bertha Peachey.
Joe was a dairy farmer and taught school and drove bus for three years. Most recently, he was a taxi driver for Peachey Wood Products.
He was a member of Pleasant View Amish Mennonite Church and the Dutch Shanty. He enjoyed reading, studying history, visiting and hunting.
A funeral service will be held in his memory at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013, at Pleasant View Amish Mennonite Church, with Bishop David Peachey and Ministers Arthur Gerber and David Byler officiating.
Burial will take place in Locust Grove Cemetery, in Belleville.
His family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, at the church.
