July 7, 2014
Associated Press

A daily look at late-breaking news, coming events and stories that will be talked about in Pennsylvania on Monday:

PHILLY ROWHOUSE WHERE FOUR YOUNG CHILDREN DIED HAD SMOKE DETECTORS INSTALLED LAST YEAR

Fire Commissioner Derrick Sawyer says the department had installed two smoke alarms in the house where the blaze erupted early Saturday, killing three 4-year-olds and a baby. It raced from row home to row home, even though the first fire engine was based only two blocks away and was on the scene about three minutes after the call came in.

SHERIFF ON TRIAL

A trial begins Monday for a western Pennsylvania sheriff accused of threatening to cut off a political campaign worker's hands and shoot an online news reporter. Beaver County Sheriff George David has pleaded not guilty. He remains in office because county officials are powerless to remove him and state legislators haven't tried to.

SECOND GIRL DIES AFTER DRESSER FELL ONTO HER

Beaver County Coroner Teri Tatolovich Rossi says 3-year-old Ryeley Beatty died Sunday at Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh. Her 2-year-old sister, Brooklyn, died at their home in Aliquippa, when the dresser fell onto both toddlers.

SHIPS PASSING IN THE NIGHT

The Philadelphia Phillies appear to be a sinking ship after being swept in their three-game holiday weekend series against the cross-state Pittsburgh Pirates. The Phillies are dead last in the National League East, while the Pirates are climbing in the central and are now in second place against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Pirates are headed to St. Louis for a three-game series.

JUAN PABLO MONTOYA WINS INDYCAR RACE AT POCONO RACEWAY

The Sunday win was Montoya's first in the CART/IndyCar series since 2000 and his first major victory since he won a road-course race at Watkins Glen in NASCAR in 2010.
