Russell H. Walters Sr.

MIFFLINTOWN - Russell H. Walters Sr., 84, of Mifflintown, passed away on Thursday, June 20, 2013, at Lewistown Hospital.

Born Sept. 8, 1928, in Mifflintown, he was a son of the late William Blaine and Carrie Mae (Varner) Walters. His wife of 60 years, Dorothy Jean (Pierce) Walters, died on May 22, 2013.

He is survived by: five children, Joyce Page and husband, Robert, of Port Royal, Russell Walters Jr. and wife, Cindy, of McAlisterville, Clayton Walters and wife, Angie, of Mifflintown, Debra Strawser and husband, Larry, of McVeytown, and Dennise Peresolak, of Hummelstown; four brothers and three sisters, Clifford G. Walters and wife, Joanne, of Reedsville, and Brooks E. Walters and wife, Sue, Clyde A. Walters, Larry P. Walters, Ethel Bashore, Norma Parker, and Loma Saner and husband, Donald, all of Mifflintown; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Doran G. Walters, Marlin W. Walters, Gerald D. Walters and Blaine S. Walters, and four sisters, Helen Hargadon, Betty Cox, Beulah Haubert and Levenia Dunmyre.

He served in the U.S. Army in Korea with the 2nd Infantry Division and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with the letter V for valor which he earned in combat.

He was a brick mason.

One of his hobbies was collecting Army and Korean articles relating to the war.

He also enjoyed gardening, collecting arrowheads, hunting, watching wildlife and traveling to Indiana with his wife. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 24, 2013, at Guss Funeral Home Inc., 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown, with Pastor Gay Irwin officiating. Interment will be in St. Stephen's Lutheran Cemetery, Licking Creek Valley, where full military honors will be accorded by the Juniata County Veterans Council.

There will be a viewing from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, June 23, 2013, at the funeral home.
