LEWISTOWN - Following months of meetings and negotiations, the Mifflin County School District Board of Directors will vote on a final 2013-14 general fund budget during its regular voting meeting next Thursday.
During a committee-of-the-whole meeting Thursday, Sean Daubert, chief financial officer, presented a final recommendation for the board to adopt a $67,255,515 spending plan that, if passed, will not increase taxes for the 2013-14 school year.
"This is the exact budget you passed last month," Daubert said, referring to the passage of a tentative budget during the board's May 23 voting session. "It's been available for public inspection for the required number of days. If you don't have any changes in the next week, that's the one that we'll go with."
In other business, the board agreed to attempt to start next Thursday's meeting a hour earlier than usual, 6:30 p.m., in order to discuss a proposal for renovations to the Mifflin County Junior High School. During the board's May 23 meeting, the district's architect, Vern McKissick, was on hand to offer a lengthy presentation on his recommendations for the project, which has yet to be voted on. Board members Beth Laughlin and Walter Harpster both agreed that more board discussion is needed before any final decisions are made. They requested Superintendent James Estep to contact McKissick to see if he would be available next week should the board have further questions.
In other business, during a school board member comment period, Mary Lou Sigler spoke out in defense of Estep regarding several comments that were published in the Sentinel's Open Line section following the June 11 graduation ceremony for Mifflin County High School. The comments referenced Estep's absence at the event.
"I think the public needs to know that if the graduation had been held on its regularly scheduled day, which was Monday, he would have been there," Sigler noted. "On Tuesday (the night graduation was changed to) he had two extremely important meetings, one regarding custodian negotiations and the other regarding the Career and Technology Center, and therefore could not attend the graduation ceremony."
