LEWISTOWN - Retired Trooper John J. Hayward Jr., 79, of Lewistown, died Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at his residence.
He was born Aug. 27, 1933, in Plymouth, the son of the late John J. Sr. and Edith Mae (Smith) Hayward.
He is survived by his wife, Sara (Beegle) Hayward, whom he married on Oct. 16, 1958.
John is also survived by: his son, John "Jack" Hayward III and wife, Debra, of Sheboygan, Wis.; daughter, Stacy L. Kirschner and husband, Robert, of Meriden, Conn.; and grandchildren, Katherine Vanase and husband, Jon, and Joseph Kirschner, all of Connecticut.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Joan Voytush.
He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War from 1951 to 1955.
After graduating from the State Police Academy, in Hershey, he was stationed in Hollidaysburg, Bedford, McConnellsburg, Philipsburg, Huntingdon and Lewistown, where he retired with 27 years of service. After he retired, he worked at Harrisburg Community College in security, retiring in 1995.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, of Lewistown. He also was a member of the Retired State Police Association of PA, National Fraternal Order of Police, Union Lodge No. 324 F&AM Lodge of Mifflintown and Plymouth Lodge No. 332 F&AM and Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Bloomsburg. He was a 32nd degree Mason.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 13, 2013, at Barr Funeral Home Inc., 120 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Paul Carter officiating. Military services are provided by VFW Post 7011.
A visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, at the funeral home.
