HUNTINGDON - John Leroy Wyland, 86, of Huntingdon, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013.
Born May 3, 1926, in Potters Mills, he was a son of the late Theodore and Jessie (Harshbarger) Wyland. His wife, Elizabeth M. Franklin, whom he married on Dec. 24, 1949, at Creaver Methodist Church, in Petersburg, preceded him in death on June 7, 2000.
He is survived by: children, David E. Wyland and wife, Kristy, of Yankton, S.D., Denny Wyland, of Huntingdon, and Lorrie Noey and husband, John, of Huntingdon; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and siblings, Marian Aukerman, of Spring Mills, and Bruce Wyland and wife, Stella, of Spring Mills.
He was preceded in death by a grandchild, Elizabeth Noey, and siblings, Evelyn Wyland, Harry "Bill" Wyland, Martha Kahley, Robert "Bob" Wyland, Arlene Aukerman, Paul Wyland and Ray Wyland.
He was a life member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association and National Education Association, serving in various capacities.
Mr. Wyland began teaching in a one-room school at Reedsville, and later worked as a teacher and guidance counselor at Kishacoquillas School District and The Huntingdon School District, retiring in 1986.
He was also a sports writer for The Sentinel and The (Huntingdon) Daily News.
Funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family, with the Rev. C. Rayvon Hillard officiating.
Burial will be held in Sprucetown Methodist Cemetery, Spring Mills.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 123 S. Sparks St., State College, PA 16801.
