United Way hits 90 percent of goal

February 16, 2013
From staff reports , Lewistown Sentinel

LEWISTOWN - The United Way of Mifflin-Juniata has reached 90 percent, or $540,110, of its goal of $600,000 during the campaign that began on Sept. 19, 2012, and runs until March 15.

The Mifflin County Playground Association is one of the agencies that benefits from working with the United Way. Chairperson Nikki Hidlay explains how partnering with the United Way has served the association:

"The Mifflin County Playground Association has been fortunate to partner with the United Way of Mifflin-Juniata for many years. Over the past summer, 10 area playgrounds offered summer recreation programs to more than 500 children in Mifflin County. The programs offer a safe, supervised location for children to socialize and stay active. Children have the opportunity to participate in games, sporting events, crafts, swimming and field trips.

"Without financial contribution from the United Way, most of the programs could not be offered. However, financial support is only one of the many benefits from the partnership.

"The United Way of Mifflin-Juniata helps provide and develop training for the playground supervisors, in collaboration with Communities That Care and Fame EMS. They also assist the association with programs such as bike rodeos and coordinate efforts with local police departments. The United Way uses its website to communicate information to fellow agencies and the public about our programming and schedules.

"We are proud to be a partner of the United Way of Mifflin-Juniata to improve the lives of children in Mifflin County."
