Edith Nipple, Joe Parson and Jim Yoder roll out and cut doughnuts Monday for Friendship Fire Company’s Fasnacht Day fundraiser. The fire company is making 400 dozen doughnuts in conjunction with Lack-Tuscarora EMS and the local Amish community. Any doughnuts left over will be available for sale today at the Port Royal Community Building. Fasnacht Day is traditionally celebrated on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Lent begins, as a means of emptying a household of ingredients typically involved in Lenten fasting. Fasnacht celebrations allowed observers of Lent to have one last sweet treat before giving them up until Easter.
