LEWISTOWN - John William "Bill" Hartman, 86, of Lewistown, was surrounded by his family when he died on Jan. 16, 2013, at the Village of Laurel Run, in Fayetteville.
Born in 1926, in Hagerstown, Md., Bill enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and saw combat in the Pacific as a gunner's mate on the light cruiser USS Atlanta (CL-104). Bill and his crewmates were some of the first Americans to enter Tokyo Bay after the initial Japanese surrender.
On New Year's Day, in 1947, Bill married the love of his life, Frances Farrie; they were married for 66 years. Bill enjoyed a 50-year career working for Glick's Shoes and worked his way from stock boy up to senior management.
Bill is survived by: his wife, Fran; son, Michael (Sandy) Hartman; and daughter, Brenda Kauffman. Bill enjoyed his five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Estella and John Hartman, and grandmother, Josephine Wolfe.
A public memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at St. John's Lutheran Church, in Lewistown.
The family will greet friends starting an hour before the service.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be given to the Village of Laurel Run residents fund, 6375 Chambersburg Road, Fayette, PA 17222, or St. John's Lutheran Church, 120 N. Main St., Lewistown, PA 17044.
