CAMP HILL - Klare S. Sunderland, 78, of Camp Hill, passed away Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, at home.
Born Aug. 14, 1934, he was raised in McVeytown and spent most of his adult life in the Harrisburg area. He was a son of the late Steward and Sara Alice "Dolly" (Moore) Sunderland.
Klare graduated from McVeytown High School in 1952 and Juniata College in 1956. He was president of his high school and college senior classes.

While attending college he sold cars for David Sausman at Sausman Chevrolet, in Thompsontown. After graduation in 1956, he continued to sell cars and was school bus manager for Sausman Chevrolet, in Steelton, and later in Lemoyne, eventually becoming the owner of the dealership which became Sunderland Chevrolet.
Klare was a born entrepreneur who could sell anything. He enjoyed buying and selling over 17 automobile dealerships and currently had six dealerships. His current dealership group's sales rank 124th in the United States.
At the time of his death, Klare was the president of The Sun Motor Cars Automotive Group, in Mechanicsburg, and Orland Park Mercedes-Benz and BMW, in Oland Park, Ill. He was also engaged in numerous other business and charitable endeavors.
Klare was a member of the Juniata College Board since 1970 and was past president of the Juniata College Central PA Alumni Club. He served as chair of the board of trustees at Juniata College from 1991 to 1996. Klare was chairman of Juniata's National Alumni Campaign for the $10 million "Margin of Difference" capital effort. He also served a dual role in the Century II Campaign as chair of the trustee gifts committee and the Knox Stadium Project, which raised in excess of $20 million. He was past chairman of the finance and investment committee, general chairman of the Juniata College Stadium Improvement Project and Trustee Gifts. He was honored by Juniata College as a distinguished graduate, was the recipient of the National Alumni Association's prestigious alumni service award for 1989 and was presented with an honorary degree, Doctor of Laws, at Juniata's commencement in May 1997.
A dormitory named Sunderland Hall was dedicated in 1998. In April 2008, Klare received Juniata College's John C. Baker Award for exemplary service.
Klare was an incredibly generous person who helped numerous charities and people in need without wanting recognition. He was a member of West Shore Evangelical Free Church, in Mechanicsburg, and a past member of the board of directors of Graystone Tower Bank. In December 2009, he was presented with the West Shore Chamber of Commerce Business Achievement Award and was recognized for his years of involvement with Central Pennsylvania's Elegant Progressions.
Klare was a special and charismatic individual who will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He enjoyed hunting in Montana and especially enjoyed his time spent with family and friends at his cabins in Clearfield. He was a Penn State and NFL fan for more than 40 years and traveled to numerous cities across the U.S. to support his teams. In his later years he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, including attending their sports and musical events.
Surviving are: two daughters, Debra Kay Sunderland and her husband, Donald Mark Ritchey, of Mechanicsburg, and Donna Kyle Sunderland and her husband, Alan Robert Benson, of Etters; a son, Daniel Klare Sunderland and his wife, Kerry Lynn Wolfe, of Mechanicsburg; a sister, Barbara Anna "Sis" Rive, of Abilene, Texas; 10 grandchildren, Laura Kay Ritchey, Eric Randal Benson, Jennifer Michelle Benson, Rebecca Lynne Ritchey Sedler, Michael Wayne Benson, Ryan Craig Ritchey, Jordan Elizabeth Sunderland, Jessica Lynn Sunderland, Katherine Son Tra Benson and Matthew Daniel Sunderland; two great-granddaughters, Gabriella Lynn Steck and Evelyn June Benson; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Klare was preceded in death by his brother, Randall Eugene Sunderland.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at the West Shore Evangelical Free Church, 1345 Williams Grove Road, Mechanicsburg, with Klare's pastor, the Rev. Dr. Phillip R. Thorne officiating. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family at Mattawana Cemetery, McVeytown.
Viewings will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at Malpezzi Funeral Home, 8 Market Plaza Way, Mechanicsburg.
