McVEYTOWN - A 19-year-old man was struck by a Norfolk Southern train at 12:05 p.m. Sunday on tracks near Horningford and River roads in McVeytown, Bratton Township, McVeytown Fire Chief Barry Sunderland Sr. said.
Sunderland said the unidentified 19-year-old was taken to Penn State Hershey Medical Center via medical helicopter.
"He suffered pretty serious injuries, but he was up walking around when responders got there," Sunderland said.
No other details about the man's condition were available.
Pennsylvania State Police Lewistown issued a report stating Norfolk Southern Police are handling the investigation and state police have no information to release.
Dave Pidgeon, manager of public relations for Norfolk Southern, said the eastbound train was traveling from Conway to Harrisburg and was going through a 65 mile-per-hour track speed zone for freight trains.
"We don't exactly know where he was when the train struck him," Pidgeon said.
Pidgeon said the train was made up of five locomotives and 58 cars, 37 carrying loads and 21 that were empty. The train weighed 6,222 tons and was 8,683 feet long.
Pidgeon declined to comment further on the incident, saying the investigation is ongoing and no further details are being released at this time.
McVeytown Fire Co., McVeytown EMS, Pennsylvania State Police Lewistown and Fame EMS were dispatched to the scene.
