Charles Harry Bender

LEWISTOWN - Charles Harry Bender, 86, of Ort Valley Road, Lewistown, died at 7:56 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012, at the Lewistown Hospital.

Born Nov. 2, 1926, in Lewistown, he was a son of the late James Roland and Mildred Mae (Smeigh) Bender. Charles married Frances "Jo" (Mateer) Bender in 1945. She preceded him in death on April 1, 2009.

Surviving are: two sons, Gary Bender and wife, Carolyn, of Burnham, and Butch Bender and wife, Alice, of McClure; daughter Deb Elsesser and husband, Mark, of Lewistown; nine grandchildren, Tracy Reeseman, Jeff Bender, Angie Lightner, Shane Bender, Susan Armstrong, Butch Bender Jr., Bill Bender, Todd Elsesser and Amy Elssesser; 22 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Charles was proceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Ashley Bender, and one brother.

He graduated in 1944 from Burnham High School. He was employed at American Viscose and other various jobs before going to Standard Steel, where he retired in 1982 at the age of 56 from the steam plant as a supervisor. He then worked part time at Mifflin County Airport. He greatly enjoyed his position and the camaraderie he had with the pilots and friends he met there.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday Dec. 22, 2012, at Juniata Memorial Park, with the Rev. Robert Zorn officiating.
