Questions complainers about county budget

December 18, 2012
Lewistown Sentinel

To the editor:

In response to the complainers on the Open Line who dislike the proposed tax increase by the Mifflin County Commissioners, I have a reply.

Have the complainers read the proposed budget? I have. Have the complainers questioned the commissioners on any items within the budget? I have.

I have seen very few citizens at the workshop meetings on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month. Again, each first and third Thursday, at the regular voting meetings, there are few if any interested persons from the public.

Where are you? I feel so alone for much of the year. A "snowbird couple" does participate in these important meetings during their northern residence because they know the importance of keeping tabs on a portion of government that we can actually impact.

I questioned a portion of the budget on Thursday Dec. 13 and expect that the commissioners will try to satisfy me with a comprehensible answer at 9 a.m. Dec. 20.

After you have studied the budget, will you have any questions to present?

I'll see you in the meeting room on the second floor of the courthouse on Thursday.
