Robert ‘Bobby G’ Gombos

LEWISTOWN - Robert "Bobby G" Gombos, 77, of 15 Blue Juniata Drive, Lewistown, went to be with his Savior at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, at his home, with his wife and companion of 25 years, Harriet (Wilt) Gombos, by his side.

Born Aug. 11, 1935, in Rankin, he was the son of the late Paul and Mary (Ballas) Gombos.

He is survived by: four daughters; a number of grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is also survived by his brothers, Ed Gombos, of Pittsburgh, John Gombos and wife, Carol, of Pittsburgh, and Tom Gombos and wife, Rosemary, of Venice, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, George and Paul Gombos.

He was the youngest of six boys who formed their own basketball team "The Gombos Brothers" playing against Sweitzer Chevrolet and Spic & Span.

Bobby was a graduate of Homestead High School and moved to the area in 1955 after attending Juniata College on a basketball scholarship.

He was employed at Standard Steel, in Burnham, for more than 20 years and then was a realtor for a number of years.

He was raised Greek Orthodox and was a member of the Grove Memorial United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Lewistown Country Club for more than 50 years and he refereed basketball for more than 25 years.

He was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society and the March of Dimes.

His funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012, at the Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., with the Rev. Teresa Fink officiating. Interment will be in Wilt Cemetery.

His family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions in Bobby's memory can be made to the American Cancer Society, 342 S. Logan Blvd., Burnham, PA 17009.
