HARRISBURG - Karen E. Engle, 63, of Harrisburg, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, at the University of Maryland Hospital.
She was born Nov. 14, 1949, in Lewistown, and was the daughter of the late William and Betty (Harman) Engle.
She is survived by: a sister, Michelle Zimmerman and her husband, Jack, of Harrisburg; a half sister, Ella May Condron, of Lewistown; a half brother, William Engle, of Harrisburg; and two nephews, Dustin Lynn Zimmerman, of Mifflintown, and Shawn Michael Zimmerman, of Harrisburg.
Karen attended Shippensburg University, where she earned both a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in elementary education. She was the editor of the college newspaper during her senior year, and she was part of a number of organizations including Pi Delta Epsilon, a journalism fraternity, and Drama Club.
She had an adventurous side; she loved flying planes. Her greatest passion in life was teaching. She loved the students and through her love of writing, inspired them to write also. She taught sixth grade at the Paxtonia Elementary School and later worked for Central Dauphin School District, retiring after 35 years. Karen was fun-loving, generous and the best friend anyone could ask for and she will be sadly missed.
A viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, at Hetrick-Bitner Funeral Home, 3125 Walnut St., Harrisburg.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 6, at the Mount Rock Cemetery, in Lewistown.
