November 17, 2012
Lewistown Sentinel

To the editor:

On behalf of the Juniata County Veterans Council I want to thank those personnel who helped make the 20112 annual Veterans Queen Ball a success.

Ticket winners for the Queens contest were: Audrey Rowles $300, Kevin Shoop $200, April Shenk $100, April Garland $50, Matt Danner $25, and Norma Frymoyer $25.

The event included music by Chris Hoffman (Storm), barbecue pulled pork and barbecue ham sandwiches, macaroni salad, veggies and three dips, chips, variety of home made desserts, soft drinks and coffee.

The buffet was set up by The American Legion Post 298 ladies auxiliary including Pam Amig, Deb Lynch, Sue Yarnall, Michele Bargo and Karla Bishop. A special presentation of a plaque was given to Louise "Sissy" York inscribed "In grateful appreciation for more than 20 years of dedicated service as Juniata County Veterans Council Queen candidate and Queen's Ball Coordinator. Mrs. York had retired from this position which is now being coordinated by Sandy Lebkicker and Lesa Oberlin.

Thanks to all queen candidate sponsors, attendants, parents and friends who help this year's ball be a success.

On Nov. 10, the Juniata County Veterans Council held its annual Veterans Day Parade in Mifflintown-Mifflin. The council wants to thank the Juniata County High School Senior Band, the East Juniata County High School Senior Band and their directors, cheerleaders, and flag bearers, the Juniata County Sheriff's Department, Mifflin Fire Company, Juniata County Cub Packs 60 Mifflintown, Pack 46 Port Royal, Pack 69 Thompsontown, Boy Scout Troop 65 McAlisterville, Troop 160 Mifflintown and their leaders;

American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 298, Thompsontown Amvets Post 122, Jim Swartz's Grand Marshall carriage, Terry Lebkicker's Grand Marshall Motorcycle, Ramsey Trucking who furnished the flat bed truck carrying Queen Kirsta Ruble and her court, 2011 Juniata County Veterans Queen Megan Lebkicker, Fayette EMS, Thompsontown Ambulance Company, Mifflintown Fire Company, Central Juniata EMS and all others who participated in this annual event.

The council would like to thank all the personnel, groups, and so on that have given their time in helping out the Juniata County Veterans Council in its endeavors this past year. The veterans council also wishes to acknowledge the newspaper photographers etc. from The (Lewistown) Sentinel, The Times, and The Juniata Sentinel for their continued newspaper coverage of various veteran events. (Note: I erroneously gave The Sentinel photographer Buffie Boyer the wrong names for her parade picture in the Monday, Nov. 12 newspaper. From left to right the veterans are John Bell, Butch Pines, Steve Wirt and Tom Gray - "my bad").

I also want to thank the local radio stations for their continued support. "Dan" at WJUN, Eick Lane at KVAT and Mary Lee and MERF radio.

Special thanks also go out to the American legion Post 298 and The VFW Post 5863 and their employees and personnel.
