MIFFLINTOWN - In an effort to compensate for the closing of county courthouses early this week, Gov. Tom Corbett Monday announced an extension to the deadline for requesting absentee ballot applications in areas affected by Hurricane Sandy.

According to a press release from the Pennsylvania Department of State, the deadline for voters to return applications to county election offices was Tuesday. However, deadlines are being extended by one day for each day the county courthouse was closed.

Absentee ballot applications will be BALLOTS accepted until 5 p.m. today in Mifflin County, according to a press release from the Mifflin County Board of Elections. The deadline to return absentee ballots will remain 5 p.m. Friday. Ballots can be delivered personally to the Election Office or mailed to the Mifflin County Board of Elections, 20 N. Wayne St., Lewistown, PA 17044.

Jeffrey Zimmerman, of the board of elections in Juniata County, said the Juniata County deadline for absentee ballot applications has been extended until 5 p.m. BALLOTS Thursday. Applications are available at the Voter Registrar's Office in the Juniata County Courthouse in Mifflintown, reopening at 8 a.m. today.
