To the editor:
The letter of Oct. 10 entitled "Voting for Romney-Ryan would set the county back," is full of illogical and misleading statements and draws unrealistic conclusions. Logic and the facts of the present state of our economy and social programs, renders the conclusions drawn from the letter destructive for the future of our country.
To assume that the approach and plans of President Obama for a second term would have a better and different effect on our economy is illogical. Liberal trickle-down government, with massive ill-directed spending that have wasted billions of taxpayer dollars, with no positive economic results, did not and will not work. The burden of stimulus funding to school districts, that was later pulled, is having a negative effect across the country as well as in Mifflin County. The labor participation rate is lower by millions than when this administration began yet the unemployment rate is reportedly the same and many of the jobs are part-time. Why has he waited for a second term, while we suffer, to work his "balanced approach?"
The letter's assertion that Governor Romney's plan for less government and less taxing results in less government revenue are not supported by history. History has proven that high taxes and the threat of higher taxes has slowed and decreased economic growth as we are now seeing. The middle class has always benefited from polices to stimulate the economy as proposed by Romney.
Under President Obama, our national security is threatened. We are now clearly seeing the deadly results of his leadership in Afghanistan and Libya. The terrorist attack in Libya resulted in the killing of four Americans. The apologies, and his use of a video tape to cover up the true cause of the killings can only embolden our enemies. It is logical that we must take a position of strength rather than a system of deceit and apologies to assure our country's defense. Also, spending for defense provides good paying jobs for millions and advances technology which benefits us all.
Following President Obama's approach to social programs, is a sure path to the economic situation faced by Greece and other European countries. The President and his policies have maintained a greater than $1 trillion annual deficit and have added $5 trillion to our debt. There is no reason to think that this president will change that destructive path. Continuing these fiscal policies will surely result in the transformation of the United States as we know it.
The proposals of Gov. Romney will assure that the social advances we have gained over the last century are carried out realistically and are secure for another century. This can be done without modifying the benefits of current recipients. Gov. Romney's policies and proposed programs will result in a turn in our fiscal direction of higher deficits and debt and lead to a secure economy and, therefore, a secure United States of America.
Gov. Romney gives voters a clear and logical choice this election.
