MIFFLINTOWN-Roy E. Varner, 96, of Fermanagh Township, Juniata County, died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012, at his home.
Born Nov. 28, 1915, in Fermanagh Township, he was the son of the late Edward and Jennie (Sheary) Varner. He was preceded in death by his wife, Fannie M. (Frye) Varner, on Nov. 9, 2003.
He is survived by: three sons, Vern E., Marlin L., and Robert B. Varner, all of Mifflintown; one daughter, Wanda J. Raver, of Bryan's Road, Md.; one brother, Harold Varner, of Arkansas; two sisters, Esther Walters, of Brookline Manor, Mifflintown, and Alma Stuck, of Thompsontown; 14 grandchildren; 19 great- grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brothers Pharus L., Clair L., Merrill W., Leonard A., Floyd G. and Blaine A. Varner.
Mr. Varner attended Big Run School.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II. He worked at the Jericho Mills Feed Mill for 62 years, first working for H.D. Schell for 29 years. Then, he owned and operated the mill himself until 1971, when he entered into a partnership with his son Robert. They operated the mill together until 1981, when he retired. His hobbies were hunting, reading, gardening and helping and enjoying his family.
He was a member of the Pine Grove United Methodist Church and the Mexico Gun Club.
His funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012, at Guss Funeral Home, 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown, with his granddaughter, Jodi L. Strawser, officiating. Interment will be in the Lost Creek Mennonite Cemetery.
There will be a viewing from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, 2012, at the funeral home.
